Human Dignity in the Face of Poverty
This panel, a part of CWF’s 2017 Symposium titled “Encountering the Poor: A Feminine Lens on the Problem of Poverty”, featured Suzanne Hollman, PsyD, and Susan Selner-Wright, PhD. Hollman, in her talk Emotional Afflication and Poverty: Locating Human Dignity on the Margins of Society, addressed the indisputable link between mental illness and poverty by providing an overview of the state of the research on this subject. Selner-Wright used gripping personal experience to propose ontological poverty (i.e. vivid and persistent awareness of the implications of our own creatureliness) as a fundamental lens through which all poverty should be seen.
